Drunken passenger 'lashed out' over £2 taxi fare

TAXI passenger Paul West “lashed about” during a violent struggle with a policeman after an argument about a taxi fare, Grimsby magistrates heard.

West, 50, of Coniston Avenue, Grimsby, admitted assaulting a police constable and using threatening words or behaviour on January 12.

Nick Wyman, prosecuting, said West had been drinking heavily. He was in a taxi and the driver asked for a £2 fare. West reacted aggressively and the driver pressed the emergency button.

The police arrived but West was “lashing about”. There was a clash of heads with an officer.

Andrew Havery, mitigating, said unemployed West thought his friend had paid the taxi fare. West, a “recovering alcoholic”, was given a one-year conditional discharge and was ordered to pay £50 compensation to both the officer and the taxi driver and £85 costs.

I wish they'd start making people responsible for the amount of alcohol they consume and stop using it as an excuse for bad behaviour

How can they manage that when a alcoholic gets £145 a week on top of their benefits because it's classed as a disability.

A mate of mine is a recovering alcoholic, he's been clean now for 3 years, he used to get £139 a week then his benefits on top like sick money, housing benefit and all the other add ons, he was on the thick end of £400 a week for doing nothing.

If they took the £145 a week beer money away it'd sort it out within months.

It's the same for drug addicts, they get the same £145 a week because it's classed as a disability, we all know where that money goes don't we??
