| Post subject: | New driver |
first post,greetings all. Just started as a ph driver,using own car. feeling my way into the job,I'm not looking to make a fortune,just a steady income,days 8 till 8,Friday a late one till 10pm and Saturday off. Its my first week,and my takings average £60 a day. What I'd like to ask ,should I be taking more than this for the hours I work,or are they par for the course? Or am I too slow for this job? |

you'll get better as you learn the routes. but even so £60 for a 12 hour day is a bit shocking. |

You probably won't make as much as the experienced guys, but on the other hand you shouldn't be making hugely less either. But if your area isn't prosperous and it's easy to get into the trade, then £5 an hour gross certainly wouldn't be surprising. Give it a few weeks, then try working a few nights instead, if you can, which should be better. Likewise, you might be better working all weekend if you can and having a couple of days off during the week. Experiment with different shifts if you can, find out what the other cars are taking (but watch out for the bullshitters) and consider another office. Can you tell us which town you are in? |

Your takings you say are averaging £60 a day. That works out at less than £5 an hour. You say you are running your own car. Have you worked out what your expenses are per day to cover your running costs? How much are you then left per hour? Just interested. Hope things soon pick up a bit. Hate the thought of you making all that effort for what is most likely less than the government minimum wage. Best wishes. |

Don’t know your area but here’s a wee bit advice from the Edinburgh Bad Boy, get yourself Satellite Navigation a lot of the Ph are installing it up here. They tell me that Navicore Personal is a good model. It comes in roundabout the £200 mark. This piece of kit will take the pressure off and leave you to concentrate on getting the work. You can then learn the routes as you go.

Your best bet is to work on a circuit that has quality work and quality vehicles. The firm I work with have both, and if there is any work that we don't want, then we bin if off to GBC's mob.

hello seaney53 just to let you know iam starting out as a PH driver this wk and will let you know how i get on. i would say that getting a sat nav system is a good idea i have got a Tom Tom 700 cost £550 and its worth every penny. a few pals who are in the trade have them right now and it helps you get established and also learn routes and cuts down on the stress a wee bit and i have seen a few black cabs with them as well. i will be doing nights and wk ends mostly as thats where the cash is all the best try out this link it for the TOM TOM http://www.tomtom.com/products/product.php?ID=74 |

Thanks for all your advice! Things have definately picked up and I am now earning much more than I was in the early days. Guess its all about learning the shortcuts,and memorising the the routes. Sat nav is in the process of being installed by the company-cant wait! Once again,thanks. |
