Doncaster’s taxi drivers given first aid training


Taxi drivers from across Doncaster are being offered first aid training to help them deal with emergency situations.

Doncaster Council is offering the training to ensure the town will have a team of mobile first aiders equipped to take charge of situations and deal with casualties in a confident and professional manner.

Door supervisors will also receive the same training in the coming months.

Ros Jones, mayor of Doncaster, said: “Taxi drivers spend their working lives travelling Doncaster’s roads and most of the time they take passengers from A to B without incident.

“There are times, however, when passengers can be taken ill or when the taxi is the first on the scene of an accident. This training will prove invaluable to the drivers and will give them an Emergency First Aid at Work qualification.”

Coun Pat Knight, cabinet member for public health, said: “Basic first aid saves lives and doing the correct things at the scene of an accident before emergency services arrive can be critical.

“Everyone should learn basic first aid techniques as you never know when you might need them.”

Taxi driver Aitaman Gurung added: “The training was very useful and has given me the confidence to get involved and help as much as I can if I come across an incident when I’m out driving.”

Health chiefs have also praised the initiative.

Dr Nick Tupper, a GP and chair of NHS Doncaster Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “A good knowledge of first aid is a skill for life that can be a life-saver.

“The more people we have in Doncaster who are trained, confident and able enough to apply that knowledge in an emergency situation the safer the borough will be.”

The training is being offered to licensed taxi drivers operating across the Doncaster borough at only £10 each.

Not sure I'd like it if I was expected to deal with emergencies prior to the emergency services turning up, however, I do think it is crucial that drivers know to ring 999 if they have an emergency and they should be able to describe symptoms over the phone.

The thing with being trained is it makes you liable.

If you have no first aid training and you try to help someone, and you do something wrong, you can't be held liable as you don't know the correct procedures. If you've been trained and you do something wrong then you could be sued.

Like not using the compulsory first aid kit on a passenger in case they have an allergic reaction to a plaster, or not using the compulsory fire extinguisher because i'ts too dangerous.

Yes, there will always be someone who would rather stand and watch another person die because they may get sued for trying to help. :roll: :roll:
Just out of interest, can anyone find a story where anyone in the UK has been sued for trying to help an injured person?

You won't find many, if any at all, that are untrained. But plenty of doctors, nurses, dentists.......

And how many of them were helping people in the street. It simply doesn't happen in this country.

we have to carry a 1st aid kit

we also have to carry a fire extinguisher, are we to get fire brigade training too?

how long before 1st aid training is made compulsory like Btec and NVQ and DSA test?

I think it's in France that if you have first aid training and don't use it when necessary it's an offence

I asked a fireman about this a few years back. He said

"get the f**k out and dial 999. Let the b*st*rd burn, don't even think of using that stupid bloody extinguisher"

I think it is an offence in France even if you don't have training.
