Man steals a horse after failing to find a taxi

A man has admitted to stealing a horse after a big night out because he couldn’t find a taxi to take him home – even though it took him longer to tack up than it would have taken him to walk.

Wanted to get home

Ronald Temprell faced a two-and-half mile walk to his home in Alloa in Scotland, but decided to ‘borrow’ a horse from Tulliallan Farms instead.

“I wanted to get home, but I’m not going to bump into a taxi, so we were walking and came across the horses,” Temprell said.

“As I knew about how to get the stuff [tack] on, I just started to saddle it up. It took me about an hour and a half. I could probably do it faster when I’m sober.”

Neighbours alerted the police after hearing the horse walking down the road in the early hours. Temprell, who was onboard while two other men walked alongside, was later traced via CCTV footage.

The 25-year-old pleaded guilty to stealing the horse from the farm, but claimed that he had previous experience of horses and wouldn’t have taken him, without knowing how to tack him up properly.

Community payback

“He accepts he took the horse a relatively short distance home, but he sent it back on its way,” said Alistair Burleigh who was defending the case. “It was a theft, but not on a permanent basis.”

Temprell was sentenced at Alloa Sheriff Court and will have to complete a 12-month community payback order.

So he did not steal the horse and sent it on its way? A LOOSE HORSE can kill if it is in collition with a car the car PASSENGERS WOULD BE AT RISK THE HORSE COULD BE KILLED. This guy should have had 2 years in prison. They used to hang horse thiefs .

I wonder if the community payback order will be appropriate like 12 weeks of shovelling horse manure !!

This snippet would seem to fit this thread to perfection.

Judy Wallman, a professional genealogy researcher here in southern California, was doing some personal work on her own family tree. She discovered that Harry Reid’s great-great uncle, Remus Reid, was hanged for horse stealing and train robbery in Montana in 1889. Both Judy and Harry Reid share this common ancestor.

On the back of the picture Judy obtained during her research is this inscription: ‘Remus Reid, horse thief, sent to Montana Territorial Prison 1885, escaped 1887, robbed the Montana Flyer six times. Caught by Pinkerton detectives, convicted and hanged in 1889.’
So Judy recently e-mailed Congressman Harry Reid for information about their great-great uncle.

Believe it or not, Harry Reid’s staff sent back the following biographical sketch for her genealogy research:

“Remus Reid was a famous cowboy in the Montana Territory. His business empire grew to include acquisition of valuable equestrian assets and intimate dealings with the Montana railroad. Beginning in 1883, he devoted several years of his life to government service, finally taking leave to resume his dealings with the railroad. In 1887, he was a key player in a vital investigation run by the renowned Pinkerton Detective Agency. In 1889, Remus passed away during an important civic function held in his honor when the platform upon which he was standing collapsed.”
