Cabbies' rage at sign change plans Drivers say the proposed universal signs would mean their cars wouldn't be able to fit under airport barriers Cabbies have handed in a petition to Wokingham Borough Council over planned changes to taxi signs they say will causes problems with airport barriers Cabbies have handed in a petition to Wokingham Borough Council over planned changes to taxi signs they say will causes problems with airport barriers Cabbies have launched a petition against plans to change roof signs on their vehicles. Drivers say the proposed universal signs would prevent airport trips because cars would be too high to fit under the barriers, and could lead to touting. The plans were considered by Wokingham Borough Council’s licensing and appeals committee yesterday evening. Plans for a standard taxi sign, including a council logo and licensing information, attracted 47 critical responses and a 46-signature petition following a consultation this summer. One cabbie wrote: “There is no reason or an issue for a new standard taxi roof sign and this is just another nail in the coffin for taxi drivers.” Heathrow, Gatwick and Birmingham airports all have height restrictions for taxis – the lowest is 2.05m in Heathrow. A Volkswagen Transporter, one of the larger licensed vehicles in the borough, is 1.98m in height before a sign is attached. Comments said the signs would blur the distinction between private hire cabs and Hackney carriages. One driver complained: “It will increase the chances of touting and it will encourage people to flag down private hire vehicles and this will end up in trouble between Hackney and private hire drivers.” Another said: “It feels like a sensitive time for most men, myself included, to have to fork out hard- earned money over vanity projects.” source: http://www.getreading.co.uk/news/local- ... ns-6056669 |

If the vehicle is already 1.98 meters high without the topsign, what topsign is fitted now that would get it under 2.05 meter barriers? The topsign would need to be less than 70mm high. |

Love it..Encourage WAV type vehicles then make sure they are rendered useless because they don't fit the height restriction limit...only In Britain

My wav fits T3 standard car park i don't have to use the high sided vehicle car park even assuming it isn't coned off as it often is but T4 it won't pass under the entrance sign however it used to fit no problem it's just they have decided to lower the signs and if you drive carefully under the ones at the entrance (they will push back) it still fits with plenty of room to spare !! |
