Taxi driver who attacked fellow cabbie is back on the roadsA SHAMED taxi driver who was convicted of assaulting a fellow cabbie has been allowed to return to work.
A council committee decided that Mohammed Naukhez was fit to get back behind the wheel of his taxi just a month after appearing in court following the violent attack outside Burton Railway Station.
Drivers in the town have contacted the Mail to tell of their disgust at the decision.
Naukhez, of Grange Street, Burton, was convicted of assault last month after ‘repeatedly punching’ another driver on a rank.
A Burton driver, who asked not to be named, told the Mail: “That individual is here, live and kicking. He is working and it’s totally wrong.”
Another driver, who contacted the Mail, said: “The taxi driver who was convicted has been given his badge back and has started working again.
“He was convicted of assault and within weeks he is back. It’s really dodgy.”
Cabbie Munawar Ali was left with a bruised eye and a bloody nose following the incident, which escalated after Naukhez was said to have broken an ‘unwritten rule’ among drivers by parking his taxi at the front of the queue outside the train station.
Following his conviction, the 57-year-old father-of-five was suspended, with his solicitor appearing to think it unlikely that he would drive a taxi again.
But Naukhez has now been allowed to return to his job of 30 years following a hearing that in which he was judged to be ‘fit and proper’ to hold a licence.
Naukhez’s wife Azra Shabnam believes her husband is entitled to return to work as he had been dealt with by the courts.
She said “I can’t understand why people have objections - 10 people decided. He can’t work without the committee’s decision.
“My husband has been driving for 30 years and there have been no offences, he has done nothing. This happened for the first time. He has paid his fine and is doing his community charge. He is doing everything according to the court.”
