Taxi driver subjected to attack and abuse at the hands of Redruth arsonist Nathan Sully A TAXI driver got more than he bargained for when he picked up a fare in Camborne and was subjected to an aggressive physical attack and demands to hand over money.
Nathan Sully, 25, has been jailed for four year after admitting trying to rob Gurhinder Singh Gill on November 18 last year.
At Truro Crown Court on Wednesday, Edward Bailey, for the Crown Prosecution Service, said another man called the taxi driver to pick him up from an address in Camborne and take him to Redruth at around midnight.
When Mr Gill arrived to pick up his fare Sully, of Park Close, Park Bottom, Redruth. also got into the taxi.
He asked to be let out at Avers roundabout but when the taxi stopped he grabbed hold of Mr Gill’s throat by putting his arm through a gap between the seat and the driver’s side door.
Mr Bailey said he was shouting and swearing at Mr Gill asking for money, threatening to kill him and racially insulting him.
Mr Gill managed to break free and get out of the taxi. He called the police after Sully ran off.
Sully was picked up later that night and arrested but denied the attack.
Appearing court on the morning of his trial, he pleaded guilty to assault with intent to rob.
Sully, who has 19 previous convictions, is serving a two year and eight month sentence, which was imposed last month after he pleaded guilty to setting fire to a Stonham Housing Association property in Redruth on October 22, 2011, being reckless to endangering life and to causing damage valued at £100,000.
Robin Smith, defending, said Sully had been using his time in jail by coming off drink and drugs and studying for various qualifications.
Sentencing, Judge John Neligan said: “It is a risky business being a taxi driver and we are here to protect them.
“He [Mr Gill] would have had every reason to be terrified.”
