Siege on taxi driver's cab 'like a scene from Grand Theft Auto'

A GANG of 30 revellers laid siege to a taxi driver's cab in a scene "just like Grand Theft Auto".

The driver today told the Grimsby Telegraph he has had enough of assaults, fare dodgers and abuse and will quit the job he has held for four years.

His ultimatum came as we highlighted a brutal attack on another taxi driver just hours before this one in the High Street, Cleethorpes.

The 30-year-old driver, who did not wish to be identified for fear of reprisals, came forward after reading our front page story about an attack on a taxi driver in Danesfield Avenue, Waltham, on the same night. He said: "Enough is enough. I am not going to put up with drink and drug-fuelled maniacs ruining my life."

He told how the violence flared at about 5.20am on Sunday after he refused to take six men in his vehicle, as it is licensed to carry only four.

Instead, there was another customer waiting for a taxi, who got into the back.

He explained: "The group became abusive, so I reversed away but they started kicking and punching the cab. They went nuts. Then a load of other people joined in. There were about 30 of them. It was like something out of Grand Theft Auto (the violent computer game).

"I have never seen anything like that before."

After leaving the area and contacting the police, he went back to take some video footage on his mobile phone, which can be viewed below. There is no evidence that those in the footage carried out the assault.

The police are now investigating the incident.

"I don't want to do this any more," he said.

"I try to live by the law of the land, but you are up against imbeciles.

"I think there's a Saturday night culture which is being driven by drugs. They are going cuckoo. There have been 17 and 18-year-old girls threatening to rip my head off."

Earlier that night, the driver said someone refused to pay their fare after being dropped off in Haycroft Street, Grimsby.

"This sort of thing is escalating," he said. "The police need to take this matter seriously. They say it is a civil matter if someone doesn't pay, but we are taking drink and drug-fuelled people.

"A brick was thrown at my cab window two years ago and there is always lots of abuse.

"But this is the worst I have ever had."

The 18-year-old passenger in the back of the cab was "terrified" by the ordeal.

She said: "People came running up shouting racist abuse and booting the taxi.

"There was a girl standing in the road at the front of the taxi, so he could not drive away.

"It was like a scene from a horror movie.

"He reversed and drove around the corner and I waited as he called the police.

"I was shocked and disgusted. They were all in their late teens or early 20s."

A Humberside Police spokeswoman appealed for witnesses to contact police.

She said: "The driver of the vehicle was not injured in any way and the vehicle sustained a small number of dents.

"This incident appears to be isolated and officers have spoken to a number of taxi companies to offer advice and support."

Witnesses to the incident are asked to contact Humberside Police by calling 101, quoting crime reference 2002112.

I hope the driver notified all the other firms/drivers not to send cabs to that location afterwards. Perhaps then punters will realise that if they're abusive they're not going to get a ride, which at 5.20 am will be a little inconvenient.

Its the norm now.

I consider myself lucky, I get very few incidents of note working London.

That was until last night, which involved an asshole of another cab driver, two drunken scumbags, and eventually London's finest in size 10's.

I can't be arsed detailing the whole incident, its late, I'll see if I get time tomorrow.

Arese.hole Britain lives on.

Teen 'left frightened to get a taxi' after incident in Cleethorpes

POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a teenager was injured in a late-night incident in central Cleethorpes.

More details have emerged of an incident involving a group of people and a taxi driver in Cleethorpes High Street during the early hours of Sunday, September 6.

The information from the police was released this week, after the driver of the taxi had spoken to the Grimsby Telegraph.

In a report, he had described how he was left frightened and intimidated by a gang, after he had declined them a ride in his vehicle.

He had also taken video footage of the alleged altercation on his mobile phone, after driving back to the scene.

However, it has now emerged that one of the members of the group, 18-year-old Loren Waterman, was taken to Grimsby's Diana, Princess Of Wales Hospital with injuries to her foot and broken toes.

A Humberside Police spokesperson said: "A taxi driver stopped outside Gypsy Tears to collect a fare.

"As he did, it is alleged, a large group of people became aggressive towards the driver.

"Some of the group are then alleged to have caused damage to the vehicle, a black Fiat Doblo. This resulted in a small number of dents appearing in the driver's side door. As the taxi driver made an attempt to drive away an 18-year-old woman was injured." The woman was taken to hospital and treated for an injury to her foot."

Ms Waterman told the Telegraph how she received the injury, after the driver refused to pick her and her friends up.

She said: "I want to give our side of what happened that night.

"My four friends and I flagged down a taxi thinking it was a seven-seater, but it turned out to be just a five-seater.

"My friend tried to climbed in the car, but the driver pulled away as she was halfway in."

She said that as this happened, her foot was injured, with two toes broken. She said: "There was only five of us, certainly not 30, and we did not kick and attack his car, nor were we drunk."

Loren says that the driver then drove off and turned around at the mini roundabout opposite the Boyes store in the High Street.

She said: "When he drove off he didn't have anybody in the car. He headed towards St Peter's Avenue and was telling other taxi drivers not to pick us up.

"Three of my friends managed to get in a taxi, leaving just me and my brother, and then he came back, leaned out of his car window, and filmed us on his phone.

"I realised I had hurt my foot and called an ambulance. The taxi driver told the paramedics I wasn't hurt, but they soon corrected him saying they believed I had broken my toes.

"We have been made out to be thugs, druggies and drunks, but we were not. We did not give any racial abuse to him and just wanted to get a taxi home.

"I have been left frightened to get a taxi after this ordeal and it has shaken up my brother and friends, too."

Police are appealing for witnesses who may have seen something to call Humberside Police tel 101 quoting crime reference 2002112.
