Gravesend taxi driver threatened, sprayed in the eye and beaten up by two passengers

A GRAVESEND taxi driver was threatened with a weapon before being sprayed in the eye and beaten up by two men.

The “sustained assault” happened in the early hours of Friday (October 18) when the taxi driver collected two passengers at a petrol station in Milton Road, who asked to be taken to Denton.

When the taxi reached Shamrock Road, the driver was asked to stop and the two men asked how much the fare was.

The man in the front passenger seat then leant forward and threatened the driver with a “sharp object,” demanding “give me your money.”

When the driver turned to the second man, he was then sprayed by an unknown substance in the eye.

In pain, the driver ran out of the taxi and started to knock on the doors of houses in Shamrock Road looking for help.

The two men then searched the car before attacking the victim again, kicking and punching him.

Police officers were called to the scene at 12.30am.

Investigating officer Detective Constable Kieron Watts said: “This appears to have been a premeditated attack in which a taxi driver was subjected to a sustained assault by two men who took his mobile phone and car keys.

“Thankfully incidents of this nature are rare, but I would urge anyone who might have witnessed what happened that night or might have some information about those involved, to contact us as soon as possible.”

Both men have been described by Kent Police as white.

The first man was aged between 20 and 25 and was of slim build with short dark hair – he was around 5ft 6ins tall.

The second suspect was of a similar height and was wearing a blue hooded top.

Back 10 years ago a small rock came sailing through my cab window - the same statement was put out! A week later (I was working in Newport at the time) it came out the something like 37 buses had been stoned in the previous month
