more choice? dont they already have that? they can walk, catch a bus, or ring PH, how much more choice do they need?

I suppose OFT meant more choice in the hail and rank markets.

I don't think he is messed up, he just happens to be one of those few drivers that when they get their taxi plates from the council don't forget their mates who are still driving PH.

He most probably also realises that the only sensible way forward for the cab trade, is for the only barriers to entry to be quality standards.

Government has historically, failed miserably when it quantitively regulates markets or interferes with subsidy or trys to make everything state controlled. Look at History, look at British Road Services, Communism, etc etc etc.

Government (and the economies) have, however, suceeded where they lift restrictive practices, and provide stringent and enforced qualitative controls.

Qualitative standards should impose the level of constraint to new entry to manage the market in a structured manner. Just as is done in London with the black cabs, probably a bit to excessively. However, where you have one element of the community heavily restricted by standards (black cabs) and the other element which has been able to do its own thing for years, then you will get the confrontational attitudes that we get today.

Roll on a one tier system in which we are all equal.

Wont ever happen, but we should all have dreams.

anyone remember how good British Rail used to be? much better than this lot, and it was done for the same reasons that you now espouse.

Anyone who thinks there is a free market governing the trains is simply do lally. :?

And anyone who thinks BR was the biz, is well and true living in the past. I suggest you check your 'rose tinted' glasses.
