Carlisle 'taxi driver' raped me, claims teenager A teenager was raped by a man she thought was a taxi driver, a court was told. The 18-year-old was walking home in the middle of the night when she flagged down a car, thinking it was a taxi, a jury at the city’s crown court heard. The driver gave her a lift to her own home, it was alleged, but when she could not get in he took her to his own flat and raped her after giving her a bed for the night. Gary Pipes, 46, of Bellgarth Square, off Newtown Road, Carlisle, denies rape. The jury heard that, though he initially denied the woman had been in his flat, he now admits he had sex with her there, though he said she consented. Greg Hoare, prosecuting, said the teenager had gone out intending just to do some shopping on December 29 last year, but “as is the wont of many young people” she had become “distracted” by other things and had stayed out until the early hours of the next morning. At about 3am she spent half an hour knocking on the door at the home of a former boyfriend just off Newtown Road but when she failed to get any response she decided to walk home, he said. She tried to hail passing taxis but they failed to stop for her so she decided to walk in the middle of the road so the next one could not miss her, the court heard. “The next car that came along was driven by Mr Pipes,” Mr Hoare said. The woman, thinking Pipes was a taxi driver, asked him to take her to her home, but when she got there she realised she did not have a key and, despite her banging on the door, could not get in. Pipes then offered to let her stay the night at his flat, Mr Hoare said. Once there, he showed her to a bedroom and – fully clothed apart from her boots – she went to bed. “She was tired and had been drinking and she just wanted to go to sleep,” Mr Hoare said. “But Mr Pipes had other ideas.” It was alleged that first Pipes went into the bedroom for a chat, and returned later on wearing only his underpants. “He got into bed with her and began to touch her and tried to kiss her,” Mr Hoare said. “She told him to leave her alone, that she just wanted to sleep. She repeatedly told him to stop but he did not stop. Mr Pipes ignored her.” The court heard Pipes was traced after police went to his door after the woman took them to the block of flats containing his apartment. He initially said he had not picked up any “lass” that night, then he admitted giving her a lift but denied she had been in his flat. He denied having any sort of sexual contact with his alleged victim, and in another interview still “steadfastly maintained” that he had not had sex with her even when police told him his DNA had been found on her clothes. It was another five months, in August, before Pipes, in a statement through his solicitors, admitted he had had sexual intercourse with her. But he then said she had been “very much a willing partner”, Mr Hoare said. If that was true, he said, “it makes you wonder why he did not tell the police that” months earlier. “Why would you want to wait until the prosecution had gathered its case before admitting such an essential part of your defence?” Mr Hoare asked. “The reason, you may think, is pretty obvious – Mr Pipes found himself totally encircled by the evidence and had nowhere to go after the confirmation of the DNA link. Once again irresponsible journalism that takes the opportunity to harm the trade - and put fear into people. These constant stories that are not even half truths, are turning us into the pariah's of society. |

maybe we should start making the same generalisations about anyone up to no good with a camera being a journalist? bloody guy is just a normal Joe blogs not a Taxi or Private Hire driver, |

Thereis only one way to stop this the "trade " needs to sue for libel it would only take one successful libel case to put the fear of god into all the other rags who will perhaps start to exert some proper editorial control |
