All city black cabs could soon be fitted with wi-fi technology under plans to go before licensing chiefs.

They will be asked to consider a proposal to put in devices which will allow passengers to receive wireless broadband in hackney carriages.

The free ‘wi-fi hub’ being pioneered by London-based company Ubiquitous will work through an aerial mounted on the dashboard of the vehicle, while stickers and signs will be put up which will incorporate ‘near field technology’, which allows the passenger to scan a barcode-type image and connect up.

Ubiquitous claim the installation of the wi-fi will mean faster download speeds and be ideal for watching videos or downloading applications.

The London Taxi and Private Hire association, a division of Transport for London, has confirmed it has no objections to the wi-fi being put in black cabs in the capital.

City licensing bosses must now consider if they have any problem with the plan.

The initial ‘CabConnect’ project has been sponsored by Microsoft. A spokesman for Ubiquitous said: “CabConnect is the latest evolution in taxi advertising, specifically created by Ubiquitous to help brands engage with a ‘smartphone audience’.”

The news is the latest step towards better broadband speeds and wi-fi connections in Liverpool.

Earlier this month it was announced that Merseyside councils had signed a £15.9m deal with BT to deliver faster broadband to 43,000 businesses and homes through a scheme called Merseyside Connected.

I think they mean London Taxi / Private Hire, as in the TFL licensing authority.

Mind you the fashionable talk is that the two trades (quite rightly IMO) will be split and governed separately in the very near future.

Can't see that.
