Sterling effort from taxi drivers’ union

Derry taxi drivers who have joined the Independent Workers Union to fight for better conditions for drivers in the city have been praised by the Union’s National Executive.

Tommy Kearney, National Executive Member of the IWU has commended drivers in the city who are involved with the union.

He said: “We are encouraged by the sterling efforts being made by its Derry branch and in particular those members working within the Taxi industry. The IWU is aware of the many difficulties facing professional taxi drivers across both jurisdictions in Ireland.

“Our union has represented taxi drivers in Dublin, Cork, Galway and Derry. The IWU is very conscious of added difficulties under which our Derry members work. Difficulties such as; rising fuel costs, rising PSV costs & 10-day waiting time for plates when taxi passes PSV Test, rising accountancy fees, rising office rents and shortage of taxi ranks in city centre.”
