Thug punched and robbed taxi driver

A DRUNKEN thug who robbed a taxi driver, punched him in the face and threatened him with a bottle has been jailed for two years in prison.

Jimmy Tattersall, aged 20, had previously admitted one count of robbery and one count of criminal damage.

The offence took place on June 29 this year after Tattersall had called a taxi to take him from an Breightmet to Great Lever, Bolton Crown Court heard yesterday.

Prosecuting, Raquel Simpson explained that Tattersall was playing with the radio in the taxi despite being asked to stop by the driver, Yakub Panchbhaya.

When the taxi reached Rufford Drive, Great Lever, Harrison pulled on the handbrake and told Mr Panchbhaya to reverse into Rufford Grove.

He then pulled out a bottle from a bag and threatened the driver and demanded money.

After the driver refused, Harrison, of Woodvale Grove, Great Lever, grabbed about £60 from Mr Panchbhaya’s shirt pocket before he punched him in the face and fled.

Harrison threw a heavy object at the car which caused £100 worth of damage.

Defending, Kimberley Morton said that the offence was unplanned, out of character and that Tattersall was not a violent person.

She added: “He cannot understand why he behaved this way but accepts that he had been drinking spirits at the time — which is something he does not normally do.”

Following his arrest, Harrison was released on bail but after breaching the terms he was remanded in custody.

Recorder Fiona Ashworth said: “This is a very serious offence.

“Taxi drivers like Mr Panchbhaya who are working at night are vulnerable and your actions will have frightened him considerably.”
