Blackpool storms see man blown into path of taxi

A man is seriously ill in hospital after becoming trapped under a taxi during stormy weather in Blackpool.

Lancashire Constabulary said he was blown into the path of the vehicle near the promenade.

He was rescued by firefighters using high-pressure airbags to lift the taxi.

The promenade was closed for several hours during high-tide, but has now re-opened.

Police signs outside Mr B's amusements on Blackpool promenade, appealing for information relating to an incident where a man was blown under a taxi suffering serious injuries.

The holidaymaker blown in front of a taxi in 50mph gale force winds is thought to be from the West Midlands.

The man, in his 60s was walking along Blackpool’s New Bonny Street when he was caught off balance around 9.20pm on Saturday.

Police said the man, who is fighting for life at Blackpool Victoria Hospital, has yet to be named but he is thought to be from Wolverhampton.

Firefighters were forced to lift the black cab to free the man who had become trapped underneath it.

A Lancashire Police spokesman said: “We have contacted officers in Wolverhampton to try to locate this man’s family.”
