Taxi driver not wearing badge faces losing his licence A TAXI driver faces losing his licence after his vehicle was discovered to be missing basic safety equipment. The driver was caught by council staff and police, who had teamed up to check vehicles in Hertford and Ware last week. He had no fire extinguisher or first aid kit and wasn’t wearing his driver badge. He will now have to attend a licensing committee meeting where councillors will discuss the breaches and decide whether to revoke his licence. Four other taxi drivers were also given points under the council’s licensing point system for breaches of not wearing badges, not having fire extinguishers and another was spotted with a large crack in his windscreen. The window was due to be replaced at the weekend, after which the vehicle will be checked again. Any driver who amasses more than 12 points is taken before the council’s licensing committee for their licence to be considered. A total of 14 vehicles were selected to be stopped. Malcolm Alexander, executive member for community safety and environment, said: “The majority of taxi drivers in East Herts run safe and clean vehicles. Passengers need to know the cab they are getting into meets all the regulations and this operation will reassure them that rogue drivers will be caught and penalised.” Council enforcement officer Claire Mabbutt has passed the BTec advanced level in vehicle inspection, equipping her to carry out detailed examinations for a range of potential problems. FFs, not a lot goes on in East Herts of a night?  I don't carry a fire extinguisher nor first aid kit, why do East Herts have to? |

First aid kit is for personal use or to give to a doctor in an emergency, fire extinguisher is allegedly for putting a fire out, when the fire brigade tell you not to tackle the fire, but stand well away, and call them |

We were told that it is for the driver to use to keep the fire at bay whilst the passengers got out of the car. On one occasion, I was allerted to a fire in my engine bay by the police. They used their extinguisher and actually put the fire out. The passenger just sat in the car wondering what was going on. It took me all my time to get him out of the car. He even thought that I could continue the journey afterwards. Eventually instead of waiting for another car, he decided to walk the last 100 yards home. Oh and no, I didn't charge him for the journey.

They did it from underneath. The fire was on the tray under the engine and they somehow managed to put it out and there was no fire damage to the vehicle at all. I was very lucky. We are still using the car. |

I am surprised the London regs don't require a fire extinguisher ? Not all councils require a first aid kit I carry one in the 8 seater but as there is limited space to put one not in the Zafira we do not have to but a fire extinguisher IS required although i have never used mine in 22 years of taxiing |

Pretty sure your not advised to use either,as in if theres a fire ,call the fire brigade and same for first aid, ring ambulance |
