Taxi drivers taught how to spot and deal with drunks

Taxi firms in South Tyneside are being offered police training in spotting, and dealing with, people who have drunk too much alcohol.

The Northumbria police sessions aim to help them learn how to "spot people made vulnerable" through drink.

South Shields door staff have had similar instruction in how to judge how much someone has drunk, how old they are and whether they are on their own.

The force said cab drivers played an "integral role" at night.

'Do their bit'

"This more often than not puts them in contact with people who may be vulnerable and potentially come to harm," Neighbourhood Inspector Peter Sutton said.

"I hope firms take up the offer for the free training and do their bit."

The training was originally set up by Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner Vera Baird who said she was "delighted" it was to be extended.

"Taxi drivers are key individuals who undoubtedly deal with vulnerable people," she said.

The training is also being given to CCTV community safety staff and the charity Street Angels.

Taxi drivers who attend the sessions will receive a badge to show they have been trained.

Can intuition be taught?

Can common sense be taught?

Can experience be taught?

The way that I read this was that they wanted to train taxi drivers to spot these vulnerable people and then take them home.

Exactly, It is about being street wise. They forgot to mention as to how to spot the junkies/con men/women........still I suppose they are doing their bit to lose some "grant money" or to be able to say - we told you so,when something goes wrong.
