Night out costs site manager almost £10,000A SITE manager from Yate spent almost £10,000 on a night out celebrating a friend's birthday. But most of it went on lawyers' fees because he assaulted a cabbie on the way home. Collins accused driver Shakeel Ahmed of being rude to his partner, Bristol Crown Court heard. In an argument that ensued, as they drove along, Collins punched the driver in the head several times.
The driver stopped the car and the couple ran for it. Collins told police all that happened was some pushing and shoving.
Collins, 34, of Shackleton Avenue, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm in February.
The recorder, Michael Selfe, imposed a six-month prison sentence, suspended for two years.
He ordered Collins to pay £1,000 compensation plus an £80 surcharge, and do 120 hours of unpaid work.
The court was told Collins had to stump up £8,500 towards legal cots.
The recorder told him: "A public taxi driver doing his duty is entitled to be protected. Mr Ahmed received serious injuries at your hands."
Peter Coombe, prosecuting, said Collins called a taxi in the early hours of February 24, to collect him and his partner from the Civil Service Sports Club in Filton Avenue.
Mr Coombe said: "They were 20 minutes late and the taxi controller said they would have to pay an additional fare. There was an argument and the defendant was abusive."
The court heard there was a further "discussion" in which Collins accused the driver of being rude to his partner.
Mr Coombe said: "The defendant started hitting the driver on the left side of the face.
"Mr Ahmed stopped the car and opened the car door to escape.
"He was struck eight or nine times. The defendant and his partner ran off.
"Mr Ahmed then drove away. He described being in a lot of pain, sick, shaken and dizzy."
The court heard Mr Ahmed suffered a cut below his eye and a suspected cheek fracture.
Police tracked down Collins as he gave his address to the taxi firm.
Giles Nelson, defending, said: "It has been an extremely expensive night, to say the very least."
