Councillor "should concentrate on fixing roads rather than making claims," says taxi chief

The head of a taxi association has described the actions of a county councillor as “very hypocritical” after he made a compensation claim against his own department.

Azid Famu, head of the Epping Forest Taxi Association, made the comments after Rodney Bass, the county councillor responsible for highways and transportation, made a claim after he damaged his car on, what he described as, a “serious road defect” three years ago.

Mr Famu said: “I can understand the public making a claim but this sounds very hypocritical.

“They should concentrate on fixing the roads rather than claiming.

“It wouldn’t have happened if he had fixed the pothole in the first place.”

Cllr Bass has also rubbished calls for his resignation from the Colchester and District Driving Association of Driving Instructors.

In an interview with the BBC, he said: “The association’s comments as reported to me are, unless taken out of context, completely fatuous and ridiculous.”

Mr Famu said he would not go so far as to ask Cllr Bass to resign but did want to see an improvement to the district’s roads.

He added: “The potholes in Epping Forest are unbelievable, especially in Chigwell and Loughton.

“Some of those potholes have their own postcode. It feels like you’re on a boat sometimes the amount the car rocks about on the road.”

He also backed The Guardian’s very own highway hero.

He said: “I think Pothole Man is great. We need more people like him.”

The Guardian is awaiting a comment from Cllr Bass.
