Crewe Driver’s benefit swindle

Taxi driver sentenced for swindling nearly £7,000 in benefits

A TAXI driver has been ordered to do 100 hours of unpaid work after swindling nearly £7,000 in benefits.

Kevin Scott, of Smith Grove in Crewe, appeared at South Cheshire Magistrate’s Court on Monday, November 4 for failing to notify Cheshire East Council that his earnings had increased.

The 45-year-old was overpaid £5612.04 in housing benefit and £1,255.92 in council tax benefit.

Scott had submitted a benefits claim to Cheshire East Council on the basis of his earnings as a self employed taxi driver, indicating that he had no income.

But in February, he completed a changes form on request, advising that he was no longer self employed and was working for a local taxi firm and had been taking 40% of his gross earnings from March 2011.

Scott pleaded guilty to failing to give prompt notification of a change in his circumstances.

He was sentenced to a 12 months community order with 100 hours unpaid work £200 towards costs and £60 victim surcharge.
