Taxi drivers required to pass English language and ‘knowledge’ test under new scheme in Christchurch

CONCERN over the safety of taxi passengers in Christchurch has led to a new policy for hire cabs in the borough.

Christchurch council hopes the change in policy means journeys are now safer for anyone calling or hailing a cab in the borough.

The new scheme, introduced following concerns raised by members of the public, means that all taxi drivers are now required to pass an English language test and a ‘knowledge’ test of roads in the area as well as a test showing that they are well-acquainted with the Highway Code and the conditions of their licence.

A scheduled inspection programme of all taxis has also been introduced as part of the changes.

Cllr David Flagg, chairman of Christchurch Council’s licensing committee, said: “We have introduced this policy as a way of raising the standards for all taxi drivers in the borough and ensuring that everyone taking a cab has a safer journey.

“We are determined to take this seriously. “As an example, at a recent licensing sub-committee disciplinary hearing, a licence for a driver and vehicle was revoked for not complying with the new policy.”

There are currently 115 licensed taxis operating in the borough of Christchurch, a council spokes-person confirmed.
