Taxi driver is guilty of attempted murders after driving into crowd at east Belfast pub


A taxi driver who drove a car into a crowd of people standing outside an east Belfast pub has been found guilty of two counts of attempted murder.

Michael Porter (34) was found guilty of attempting to murder Paul Thompson and Daniel Martin in the early hours of December 19, 2011.

Porter, who is originally from north Belfast, but whose address was given as Glen Court in Newtownards, was found not guilty of attempting to murder a third man, Christopher McKay, but guilty of causing him grevious bodily injury by dangerous driving.

The trial at Belfast Crown Court lasted for a week.

Defence barrister Mark Farrell asked that Porter be released on bail.

But Judge Corinne Philpott QC rejected the request and remanded him in custody.

Porter is due to be sentenced on Friday, January 10, 2014.

Welcoming the conviction, Detective Inspector Ian Magee said: "This was an extremely violent attack on two individuals.

"Today's conviction sends out a clear message, there is a consequence for anyone who thinks that they can engage in violent behaviour.

"Police are committed to bringing perpetrators of violence before the courts."
