50 taxi drivers “sacked” after trying for better conditions

50 taxi drivers who have been campaigning for better conditions at Auckland Airport have been effectively sacked, Auckland Taxi Association said today.

The drivers, all working for President Taxis were notified on Wednesday that President Taxis would no longer have a contract with Auckland Airport as of 11.59 pm on Monday 9 December 2013.

This means that none of these 50 drivers will be able to pick up passengers from the airport from this date.

Earlier this month around 200 airport taxi drivers identified a number of abuses of taxi drivers at the Airport and formed the Auckland Taxi Association to fight for better conditions and rights. This lead to protest actions of drivers at the airport.

While the Airport Company made some minor changes, it did not resolve the major issues and then said that it would no longer talk directly to the taxi drivers but only to their contracting taxi companies.

Now one of these companies, President Taxis, has suddenly announced without the required notice that it no longer has a Airport contract from Monday night, leaving its drivers high and dry. The drivers are now in panic mode trying to get driving contracts with other companies which means added costs of brand and meter changing and time off the road for the cabs.

Spokesperson for the Auckland Taxi Association, Manmohan Singh, said he believed that President Taxis losing its contract to Auckland Airport was an attempt by the Airport Company to isolate the leadership of the Auckland Taxi Association and break its campaign for the rights of taxi drivers at Auckland airport.

However this action has meant that as from Monday night 50 airport taxi drivers have essentially been sacked. This would not be acceptable if we were employees and should not be acceptable for us as contractors, he said.

The Auckland Taxi drivers has been given support from the Labour Party and FIRST Union in its dispute with Auckland Airport.

Problem is 150 drivers aren't as unhappy as they seem that 50 drivers are no longer working the airport.

Auckland Airport taxi drivers on hunger strike

Taxi drivers in Auckland are staging a protest over working conditions and taxi-rank positions at the city's airport.

An alliance of 180 Auckland taxi drivers have begun a hunger strike at the Auckland International Airport headquarters as their industrial spat with the airport company continues.

The move is a reaction to a breakdown in negotiations over working conditions and taxi-rank positions between competing companies at the airport.

The Auckland Taxi Association (ATA), a collection of smaller taxi companies, negotiated better access to toilets, drinking water and sun shade at the international terminal two weeks ago.

The group said the hunger strike would continue until further demands were agreed to, including positioning the premium taxi rank further away from the arrivals hall and discouraging discriminatory and "racist" behaviour from the airport's security contractors.

The airport said the ATA representatives walked out of negotiations last week when no agreement could be reached on the positioning of a rival dedicated taxi rank at the international terminal used by Green Cabs and Auckland Co-Op taxis.

Both sides accused the other of lying through the media and shutting down dialogue.

Airport spokesman Richard Barker said the group was trying to reduce competition, by asking for the rival taxi rankto be moved further away from the international arrivals hall.

"That is the core issue for them. They have promised all of the problems will go away if the dedicated taxi rank goes back to its old, hidden space," he said

ATA members also want to raise the minimum inter-terminal fare from $20 to $35, which they say other companies already charge.

The association's spokesman Manmohan Singh said other larger taxi brands, like Green Cabs openly advertised their $35 charge, a claim the airport denied.

"Main-rank drivers are surviving on as little as $4 an hour," Singh said.

"The airport company is lying and putting out untruths in the media and we are sick of being treated so badly. We are treated like rubbish and slaves by ADT Security."

Singh said the security company would send taxi drivers home if they needed to leave their taxi in order to go to the toilet at the airport.

The airport said it had undertaken to appoint a dispute facilitator to resolve the situation between the drivers and security company.

Last Wednesday 50 drivers working for President Taxis were notified that President Taxis would no longer have a contract with the airport from tonight.

Auckland Airport said this was an unrelated matter that was signalled weeks ago and the licences for each of the drivers to operate at the airport would be re-approved instantly if they were employed by another operator.

Taxi standoff resolved

The standoff between a group of taxi drivers and Auckland Airport has been resolved with both sides agreeing to make some concessions.

Protest action had threatened to get out of hand, with some taxi drivers going on hunger strike earlier in the week.

However, Richard Barker, Auckland Airport's general manager retail and commercial, and Manmohan Singh, spokesman for the Auckland Taxi Association, announced a deal had been struck late last night.

The two groups have agreed six points, all of which will be reviewed in one year's time.

Notably, the airport agreed to trial a new short fare system which will allow taxi drivers to re-enter directly into the main rank after they have completed a short trip. This is expected to cut divers' wait time for their next fare in half.

Taxi drivers will also receive upgraded sunshelter, toilet and drinking water facilities.

Both very sensible, but why on earth in 2013 was this not happening before? :?
