‘An absolute disgrace’ — hunt for Dundee taxi driver suspected of stealing elderly woman’s purse and jewellery The woman says she was picked up by a taxi at the Gallagher Retail Park. A man who robbed an 86-year-old Dundee woman of cash and family jewellery has been branded “an absolute disgrace of a human being” by her grandson. Lucia Rizza’s purses containing hundreds of pounds, along with her late sister’s watch, were taken after the man, who she believes was a badged taxi driver, offered to help her into her home in the Craigie area of the city with her shopping on Sunday. Her grandson Mike Rizza, 26, told the Courier the pensioner had been left shaken by the incident. He said: “To rob an 86-year-old woman, a week and a half before Christmas while she is out shopping for her grandchildren — what an absolute disgrace of a human being. “Her sister died a couple of years ago and she carried the jewellery on her because they were quite close.” Mrs Rizza had been shopping in Gallagher Retail Park on Sunday afternoon and had realised she had left her mobile phone in the house. Mr Rizza said: “She went into a shop to ask them to call her a taxi but was told this was not allowed. “She was leaving the shop and someone must have heard her asking for a taxi. This man, who I believe was a registered taxi driver because he had the cab and the badge, offered her a lift.” After driving to her house, Mrs Rizza paid the man and he offered to help her with her shopping into the house. Mr Rizza said: “He took the shopping she had into the house, gave my gran her crutches, asked to take her bag and then took the last of the shopping into the house. “He was in there for a couple of minutes, while my gran struggled up to the house on her crutches. He came out and said he’d be on his way. “My gran got to the house, looked in her bag and both purses, containing a few hundred pounds, and her late sister’s watch and jewellery were missing. “He has had a rake through the bags, taken the purses and left.” A police spokesman said: “Tayside Division is following positive lines of enquiry after a report that an 86-year-old woman was robbed of her two handbags after being picked up by a taxi in Dundee. “The woman was picked up at Gallagher Retail Park and taken home at about 4.10pm yesterday afternoon. She got into the vehicle on the understanding it was a registered taxi. The woman was shaken but unhurt. “Officers are keen to trace the driver of a white people carrier type vehicle.” Anyone with any information is asked to phone police on 101 or speak to any police officer. Information can also be passed anonymously to the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555111. http://www.thecourier.co.uk/news/local/ ... y-1.165984 |
