Foleshill thug jailed for ten years for savage attack on city cabbie

Nicky Cannon beat taxi driver unconscious, repeatedly punching him in the face and then stamping on his the head

A violent thug is starting a ten-year jail sentence for a savage and unprovoked attack on a taxi driver in Coventry.

Nicky Cannon beat the cabbie unconscious, repeatedly punching him in the face and then stamping on his the head as he lay on the ground.

A court heard the man was saved by passing paramedics who put on their siren and drove towards the attacker to scare him off. He fled and the victim was taken to hospital.

Even after pleading guilty at the crown court in Leamington to inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent, Cannon tried to justify his attack by claiming he had been provoked.

Cannon, 29, of Cross Road, Foleshill , Coventry, was jailed for ten years and will be subject to a five-year extended period on licence after his release.

Prosecutor Raj Punia said the cabbie pulled up outside a newsagents in Cross Road when he saw Cannon, with whom he had had a problem in the past, and pulled away.

Cannon took a can of energy drink from a bag and threw it at the cabbie, who had his car window open, and it broke the wind deflector and hit the driver.

Miss Punia said Cannon then punched him to the head and face repeatedly and knocked him to the ground. “While he was on the ground the defendant continued to punch him and kick him to the head and chest.”

Two paramedics in an ambulance who were on their way to another incident saw Cannon stamping on his victim’s head with his heel four or five times.

The victim underwent an operation to have his broken jaw repaired with titanium plates. When Cannon, who had previous convictions for assault, was arrested in July he claimed the victim had shouted abuse and attacked him and he had only acted in self-defence.

The court heard that the victim suffers flashbacks, depression and panic attacks, has become a virtual recluse and has been unable to work.

Graham Russell, defending, said the attack ‘‘is highly likely to have been a once-in-a-lifetime occurrence’’.

Jailing Cannon, who also admitted damaging Mr Imaan’s car, Judge Alan Parker said: “By a merciful chance there was an ambulance nearby with two medical professionals who were horrified by what they saw.

"They were sure the man was likely to die and that they must try to bring your ferocious attack to an end, and fortunately they were able to do so.’’
