Newcastle under Lyme taxi drivers object to age rule change

TAXI drivers are objecting to plans to tighten age restrictions on their vehicles.

Newcastle Borough Council is looking to stop licensing saloon cars as Hackney carriages once they are eight years old.

Saloon cars can currently remain licensed as Hackney carriages as long as they pass an annual MOT, while those licensed as private hire vehicles have to be 'retired' after eight years. Officers believe applying the same rule to all saloon taxis will ensure their safety and reliability.

But 87 drivers have signed a petition against the proposals, while 16 have written letters of objection.

A council report says the objections are mainly based on the financial implications. The public protection committee will decide whether to approve the change on Monday.
