Council threatened by taxi strike

Taxi drivers in Lancashire are threatening to strike over an inflation-busting increase in council licence fees.

Pendle Council has told private hire and hackney carriage drivers it wants to put up charges by 5%.

The council has agreed to meet drivers after they claimed they had seen documents that showed the authority had a surplus from licence fees.

Council leader Alan Davies said the licence increase was small.

He said: "The reality is the increase we're talking about on a taxi driver's licence amounts to less than 3p a week.

"That's the scale of the increase that we're talking about and we've already agreed to defer that for four months which in practice reduces it even further."

There are many things drivers should strike for, bus lane access, drivers safety, drivers working conditions, are but a few.

But striking just because the council are trying to cover their costs is just plain dumb.

Pendle recently kept numbers control without having a survey so they did the owners a good turn in that respect but this increase applies right across the board.

If the increase is as the article suggests then the three pence a week would work out at 1.56 a year. I Can't believe anyone would make a fuss about an increase of 1.56 a year.

In our little town the 50 licensed Taxi's went on a "strike" one Friday night, which put a great strain on the police due to the amount of people left in the town at 02:00am. As soon as the biggest PH company found out they were on strike they also went on "strike".

Apparently the story goes that a police officer came down to the rank and searched one of the drivers cars and found £2000, the driver was arrested as they found this to be suspicious. As they were arresting him another driver went over and asked what was going on he also was arrested .

All the smart drivers claimed they were going home to there fellow colleagues and moved to another town in the district, the rest of the sheep sat outside the police station to 05:00am.

I know this strike never caused much disruption, but I’m sure if planned they could cause a lot of problems in the town .

That got us a few extra Gatwicks, as some of the jobs we had pre booked from heathrow were diverted to Gatwick .

What it achieved for some, was a few quid in redundancy.

And what did they do with it? They went out and bought taxi plates and are now trying to do their level best and f*** up this trade as well.
