£100,000 heroin courier jailed for four years

A drugs courier who was caught transporting nearly £100,000 of heroin has been jailed.

Brian Pagan was stopped in his taxi with his partner Claire Jopson on the M6 at Garlands, Carlisle, by police on January 10.

The pair had been travelling from Liverpool to Glasgow when they were randomly pulled over.

He was acting “nervously and could not stand still”, Carlisle Crown Court heard.

Pagan told police his partner was a fare and he was taking her to the train station.

But she had admitted he was her boyfriend and they were on their way to Scotland.

Officers could smell cannabis in the car and found a small amount for personal use.

Pagan then admitted there was a package in the back and officers found a box containing two square blocks.

They were later found to be nearly 1kg of heroin with a street value of just under £100,000, the court heard.

Mr Fish, defending Pagan, said he had “foolishly” got involved in couriering the heroin to pay off debts for his own drug use.

“He didn’t appreciate how serious this was. He certainly appreciates it now,” Mr Fish told the court.

Pagan now regretted the decision, he added, and didn’t consider the consequences of having his partner in the car with him.

Mr Fish also described Pagan as a “kind and caring” man, capable of hard work, which was demonstrated by the fact that he had recently confronted his drug addiction in prison.

Pagan, 33, of Ravenna Road, Liverpool, admitted possession of heroin and cannabis.

He was jailed for four years and 10 months for the heroin offence and two months concurrently for cannabis possession.

Jopson, 23, of Lampeter Road, Liverpool, admitted possession of heroin on the basis that she didn’t know how much there was, where it was, or where it was destined for. She was described as having been “taken along for the ride” and was handed an 18-month prison sentence suspended for two years with six months’ supervision.

Pagan must pay £120 costs and Jopson £100.

Hang on, if Pagan was a taxi driver and "he had recently confronted his drug addiction in prison", how come he was a cabbie with a prison record?

He was probably on remand after getting caught with the drugs.

I suspect he didn't tell the council, and CRB's were only three yearly.

But surely had a medical during the three years - wouldn't a doctor think of adding this relevant point?

I very much doubt he would comment unless asked.

In respect of medicals, I've only had two all the years I've been driving.
