A man was left fighting for his life after he was found close to the M62 motorway suffering a serious head injury.
The emergency services were called to the slip road off junction 5 of the M62, at Huyton, heading towards Liverpool at about 2.35am following a report of a collision.
The 22-year-old man was a passenger in a black Hackney cab.
Although the investigation is at an early stage one line of inquiry is the injured man tried to get out of the taxi while it was moving.
Today he is in a critical condition in hospital with what are described as "serious head injuries".
A Merseyside Police spokesman said the taxi driver was assisting police - he has not been arrested.
The Liverpool-bound slip road remains cordoned off while forensic examinations are carried out. The main M62 carriageway is unaffected.
Police hope to examine CCTV from the taxi as part of the probe.
