Cocaine cabbie in Sherborne loses licence

A TAXI driver from Sherborne has had his licence taken away after cocaine was found at his home.

On September 16 last year, police officers in Sherborne, executing a warrant under the Misuse of Drugs Act, conducted a search of the home address and vehicles owned by Richard Jamie Mitchell, a 41-year-old man from Sherborne working for P&J Cabs.

A number of small bags of cocaine and a small amount of cannabis was found at his home address only.

On Friday, February 28, Mr Mitchell pleaded guilty to one charge of possession with intent to supply Class A drugs and one charge of possession of Class B drugs at Dorchester Crown Court.

He was sentenced on Thursday, April 3, with a community order for one year supervision, six months Drug Rehabilitation Requirement and to 200 hours unpaid work.

A spokeswoman for Dorset Police said: “Dorset Police welcome this successful conviction. Drugs offences in Sherborne will continue to be targeted and offenders will be brought to justice.”

At the time of his arrest Mr Mitchell was working as a full time sub-contracted driver for Sherborne based taxi firm, P&J Cabs, driving the company’s dark brown 2007 Ford Mondeo.

West Dorset District Council’s Licensing sub-committee held a meeting on Friday, April 11 to discuss Mr Mitchell’s taxi licence.

Councillor Keith Day, chairman of the committee said: “After careful consideration of all the evidence the sub-committee was extremely concerned with the serious nature of the offence and decided that Mr Mitchell was not ‘fit and proper’ to hold a taxi licence and it has been revoked.”
