Cab drivers protest brings traffic to standstill outside the Shard


A mass of black-cab drivers protesting about the lack of a taxi ranks outside the Shard have brought traffic to a standstill.

Hundreds of cab drivers are staging a drive-in protest in Southwark, disrupting the opening of new hotel Shangri La which opens inside the building today.

The noisy protest of beeping taxi drivers has been ongoing since 2pm, with many displaying posters in their vehicles calling on the Mayor of London to take action.

A rank has been built 150 yards away from the landmark, which Steve McNamara, of the Licensed Taxi Drivers Association said “made no sense.”

A statement said: “Taxi rank provision is an essential provision, which also contributes to cutting pollution and congestion. The appointment of ranks on TfL roads is becoming an increasingly difficult, bureaucratic process, with the taxi trades interests receiving little consideration within the wider TfL structures.

“Events at the Shard have brought this to a head. The problem at The Shangri La Hotel is not the hotel management but the lack of an effective properly resourced strategy on rank provision at the highest level of TfL.”

The protesters also claim taxi flagging apps like Uber and Hailo are killing off the black cab industry.

Roads have been gridlocked in London Bridge, Borough High Street, Union Street , Blackfriars Bridge and Southwark Street since the demo began.

Some workers in the area have been complaining of the noise and chaos.

Andrew Murgatroyd tweeted: “If you stop beeping outside our office, I will stick a sign on the Shard saying ‘Get a bloody taxi.’”

Richard Newcome wrote: “Cabbies on strike about not being allowed to serve the shard. Roads blocked. Horns beeping. Chaos ensues.”

The Shards hotel has a Miniscab contract with Addison Lee / London Premier.

They're fleecing the guests on a whole new level.

Wait for it . . . £175 !!!!! for a Vito PH vehicle to Heathrow!

Robbing cnuts, that's the real reason they don't want a rank anywhere near the hotel entrance as punters would find out my Vito (a lot newer than the PH ones) would take them to Heathrow (without sat nav and a slave driver) for about £80.

TFL being the useless articles that they are, seem to need more convincing to give us a rank next to the venue to serve the hundreds of jobs that come out of there every day, so the drive ins / flash mobs / protests will continue. Twitter and social media make this very easy to organise in a very short period of time.

The rank was promised by TFL, it was them who rescinded on the promise and placed the rank 6 miles down the road.

Don't worry, we'll get one, unlike the county's we have a few thousand that can turn out to make our point and get the media coverage :wink:

London's black cabs plan 'severe chaos' for capital in protest against taxi app Uber

London’s black cabs have promised to bring “chaos, congestion and confusion” to London as a protest against the growing presence of smartphone taxi service Uber.

The Licensed Taxi Drivers Association (LTDA) has said that the apps that Uber’s drivers use to find passengers and calculate their fares count as taximeters – devices that are illegal to be installed in private vehicles.

The LTDA has complained to Transport for London (TfL), but the government body has said that Uber’s vehicles are not “equipped” with taximeters since there was no “connection between the device and the vehicle”.

LTDA have rejected this evaluation and are threatening to seek a judicial review with Steve McNamara, the association’s general secretary, describing the situation as “dangerous for Londoners”.

Mr McNamara told the BBC that London’s black cab drivers were planning to gridlock in the city some time in early June.

"I anticipate that the demonstration against TfL's handling of Uber will attract many many thousands of cabs and cause severe chaos, congestion and confusion across the metropolis,” he said.

Cab drivers protested against Uber's presence in San Francisco after a driver using the app struck and killed a six-year-old girl, Sofia Liu in December.

The dispute is only the latest internationally between Uber and taxi services worldwide. The Silicon Valley startup has been banned in Brussels; is currently facing a court battle in Berlin, and has been the subject of numerous protests in cities across the US and in Paris.

The San Francisco-based company describes itself only as a “pick-up” service that connects passengers with background-checked private drivers. Launched five years ago, the company now operates in more than 100 cities across 30 countries, launching in London in 2012 and in Manchester this week.

The company’s smartphone app allows users to order taxis, see who their driver will be, and track the arrival of their car - features that have been replicated by the likes of Hailo and Kabbee, who offer smartphone apps to connect passengers to black cabs and minicabs respectively

The LTDA have described Uber as “an American monster that has no qualms about breaching any and all laws in the pursuit of profit, most of which will never see a penny of tax paid in the UK.”

The smartphone app has received backing from the likes of Goldman Sachs and Google. The latter recently updated their Google Maps app (included as default in 80 per cent of smartphones worldwide) to offer Uber’s services where available.

Uber’s general manager in London, Jo Bertram, told the BBC that the company rejected the LTDA’s characterisation and that competition was “always good for the customers because it makes all of us up our game in terms of quality and service.”

I feel the London Cab trade are fighting a losing battle on the app/milage issue.

I would concentrate on the legality of the booking, not how the price is calculated.
