Brothers jailed after shouting racial abuse in attack on taxi driver in Knutton TWO brothers involved in late-night attack on a cabbie after a row over a fare have been jailed. Kyle Brown punched the taxi driver in the face twice after trying to steal his phone and his younger brother Liam, threw a glass at the car window causing it to smash. Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court heard the brothers, together with another man and two women, caught a taxi from the Sneyd Arms, Keele, to Wilmot Drive, Knutton. But when they arrived there was an issue over the fare and trouble flared. Prosecutor Howard Searle said the driver asked for £8.35 as they stopped off at a shop on the way back. But the group was unhappy as they had only paid £7 on the outward journey. Mr Searle said: “The driver agreed they could pay £7 and handed them £3 change from a £10 note. “However the Brown brothers started to cause trouble.” The court heard Kyle attempted to snatch the driver’s mobile phone and outside the cab he punched him in the face twice. The 22-year-old also shouted racial abuse at the victim. Liam, aged 21, joined in by throwing a glass at the driver’s window, causing it to smash. The driver was left with a swollen and bloodied nose and suffered blurred vision. In a victim statement he said he has since had difficulty sleeping and has been left feeling frightened and no longer works as late. Kyle Brown, of Andrew Place, Newcastle, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm and attempted theft. Liam Brown, aged 21, of Argyll Road, Normacot, pleaded guilty to criminal damage. Bernard Porter, mitigating for Kyle Brown, said his client tried to grab the driver’s telephone and punched the victim twice. Mr Porter said: “He accepts the offence is racially aggravated but not racially motivated. “He does concede racist language was used.” Nicola Bell, representing Liam Brown, conceded the offence crossed the custody threshold but said the sentence could be suspended. Judge Paul Glenn jailed Kyle Brown for nine months and Liam Brown for seven weeks. He said: “This was a very unpleasant incident. The victim and his car were attacked. The driver was vulnerable by means of his job. “He was providing a public service. This was totally unprovoked.” Read more: http://www.stokesentinel.co.uk/Brothers ... z31IqaAbOM |
