Maybe the Airport Drivers should challenge the council for their Taxi licence plates?

It's about time they had a Judical Reveue of this whole situation. The Council would have no choice but to sit up and take notice then. :?:

theyr'e not private hire drivers, they are brief holders who choose to drive PHC cars for their own selfish reasons.they could easily get a drive in a black but they want another plate to replace the one sold 2/3 years ago (a plate for nothing, where have i heard that before? perhaps they should join skulls gang)

So what's the historical background to this situation, are most of the drivers who currently work the Airport ex black cab drivers who used to work the Airport under a hackney carriage system?

Wouldn't the Edinburgh cab trade be best served with an open permit system
like Manchester?

we used to have an special airport plate yep thats right? #-o these were normal sallon cars not wavs

all the drivers at the airport hold a hack brief ,very few of them drive a hack(mostly salloons mpv') thier has never been a public rank at the airport these guys have operated a closed shop for years perhaps this time thier will finally be a public rank(although weve heard it a million times before :^o )

when the council decided to get rid of these they gave exsisting airport taxi plate holders a edinburgh hack plate , fair swap you might think?

but the greedy gits decided that they would then sell these edinburgh hack plates and put on private hire cars instead at the airport.

in effect all the council did was give these guys 25k(plate price at the time) for nothing and they will probably do it again
another well thought out council policy

I think the folks that run the ranks will do what's best for their pockets.

If they can make more out of the black cab trade, then they will. But if they can't make more out of them, then they will go back to PH boys.

For the record are the PH cheaper (at the airport) than the black cabs, because in the end I suspect that will be the deciding factor. :-$

What a load of crap, it reads like they're going to be forced on to the dole, but in reality all they will be in is the same position as PH drivers and taxi journeymen in Edinburgh generally.

OK, there will be less work in the city if a lot of the airport drivers end up there, but the blacks will be doing the airport work, so they will gain to that extent.

Thus the work's still the same in total for the same total of drivers, but the deckchairs are being moved around a bit.

Indeed, if some drivers have left the trade then the average driver in the city will gain when the change is implemented. But that's probably bollocks as well - they departing drivers would have probably went anyway.

Of course, no one likes to see drivers forced out of what they're doing just now, but it's just another symptom of the policy on the hoof approach to these things, whether it's BAA or LAs.

So now we have a situation where the Airport intend to still limit permits but it has a problem deciding who will get those permits? They have a very fine line to tread because EU legislation is very strong on equal opportunities.

Do you actually know what your talking about or do you just guess about these things, also do you have a local Knowledge of Edinburgh taxi affairs.
I only ask because you seem pretty sure that there is a legal answer to everything that is decided, I know we live in a pretty much "pc" world but that seems a bit too "Tabloid" to me, and if your only knowledge is the local rag, how come you keep making these sweeping statements like you know what is good for us up here?

Perhaps you can show me where I have ever said I know whats best for Edinburgh, or anyhwere else for that matter. I comment on events and unlike you I try and qualify my statements with fact.

The European Union is founded on the principles of liberty, democracy, respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms, and the rule of law.

Thirty three percent of the EU budget goes on Equal ops. One of the main principles of the EU is to break down barriers in trade and promote equal opportunities and free movement in goods and services. Those are the principles on which the EU is based.

Perhaps you need to familarise yourself with the Treaty of Rome, Treaty of Amsterdam and the Nice treaty.

Even though I continue to read all the of the relevant Directives and Articles of the EU, I never presume I know more than anyone else.

It might give me an advantage over some but I don't have the audacity to suggest that I know everything about EU law or any other law for that matter?

Perhaps you better reflect on what I said?

So now we have a situation where the Airport intend to still limit permits but it has a problem deciding who will get those permits? They have a very fine line to tread because EU legislation is very strong on equal opportunities.

Seeing as how Edinburgh Airport might be having a problem on how they will administer the permits, I posed the question that EU legislation is very strong on Equality and fair competition? That is not so unreasonable is it?

Perhaps you may be enlightened by browsing through the directive that comes into force this October. It might take you longer to read it than it will to find it but the exercise should do you good.

You might also might wish to read the very latest 81 page Proposals for a new DIRECTIVE OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT AND OF THE COUNCIL on the implementation of the principle of equal opportunities and equal treatment of men and women in matters of employment and occupation.

There are many directives and articles that underpin the right of fair competitiion and discrimination, you should try reading them, perhaps then you might not be so hasty to show your lack of knowledge apertaining to these matters.

Not only are the Airports limiting permits but indeed the greedy gits who sub off GNER and sell permits, restricted, if your face don't fit or you can't keep your shirt tucked in, or are a lousy dresser, or just plane gobby, you don't get a look in

These greedy gits, in my case in my area a bunch of w*nkers, so called taxi owner drivers,38 off em, shareholders of some jumped up taxi firm, some that don't even work the cabs have it all sewn up, we like ships in the night pass each other like they be on another planet, up yours, stuff you and your private rank, same city, same LO, but different dimension

This lot get up my nose, slowly but surely you can see the divide, the type of taxi vehicle standards are I would say higher quality vehicles are the permits holders, why you ask, well they got captive market, we are not allowed in there even tho Joe public walk in off the street, known fact on weekends, station permit holders clean up town ranks first with street rank cabs picking up many jobs, swoop and scoop, to which they are entitled to, once the streets are gleaned time to start working the private rank with maybe hours of captive customers waiting

It's time this restrictive practice was stopped, but hey we can't, they got 3 year contract, don't anyone say greedy git buy a permit, sorry they won't gives us one,[sell us one] contract closed, closed shop, try again in 3 years and then put your self on the waiting list to be considered, after all members have been issued there might be a vacancy and subject to shareholders say so. Oh and medical notes are not accepted

Warned you lot before, private permit ranks get me going, it's my sore point, I try not to think about it whilst at work, It's this forum seems to get me going, but I am total helpless. The monopolies commission have told em you can't restrict but they take no notice of that.

we expect 6-8 more hack plates to go in the near future, I expect some of those will want a permit no doubt. tough tittie, go and work the streets.

Please explain the following in taxi driver language.....
They have a very fine line to tread because EU legislation is very strong on equal opportunities.

Phew

To JD:
Your posts are very informative and interesting, but please give links to the legislation you are discussing - it would help all of us over-worked, under-paid night shift drivers in Edinburgh and give us the chance to keep up, to be that bit more informed and, possibly, even debate the points raised!!
For far too long, the powers that be in relation to the cab trade have gone unchallenged through the ignorance of taxi owners and drivers in relation to the laws applicable to their trade.
Keep up the good work - but give links - knowledge is power!!!
