Taxi driver admits seriously injuring Bacup dad-of-one near pub

A TAXI driver has been fined after a Bacup man was knocked down and seriously injured by his cab outside a town pub last December.

Ahroon Razaq, 41, was arrested by Lancashire Police shortly after a collision on Burnley Road, on December 7, which left Lee Corless with a serious head injury.

Razaq, of Nightingale Street, Keighley, admitted failing to stop after an accident close to the Irwell pub when he appeared before Burnley magistrates. He had previously denied the offence.

He was fined £135 with £200 court costs and a £20 victim surcharge.

Five penalty points were also imposed on his driving licence.

Another charge of failing to report an accident was dismissed after the prosecution offered no evidence. They said that Razaq had failed to give his name and address at the scene and not reported the incident within 24 hours to police.

Mr Corless, a father-of-one, had been attending a friend’s engagement party at the nearby pub before the collision occurred with the Volkswagen Passat cab.

He remained in the Royal Preston Hospital for some time with a number of injuries.

Razaq was questioned at the time and released on bail pending being charged.

Coun Jimmy Eaton led calls for traffic calming along Burnley Road in the wake of the collision as the incident came just weeks after a car careered into fencing outside Northern Primary School.
