Clifton taxi firm is flying the flag ready for the World Cup

Image
WORLD Cup fever is in full swing at a taxi firm in Clifton – where the flag of St George is already flying.

NG11 Cars, based on South Church Drive, says it is the first business in Clifton to put up bunting in honour of the impending tournament.

The firm’s directors have decked the outside of the cab office with flags from participating countries – and a mannequin they have affectionately named Ken.

Director Joe Clarke, 32, said: “We’ve dressed the mannequin in an England kit and have even embroidered the shirt with our logo.

“We’ve also got plenty of England flags up to make sure it’s patriotic.

“We’re hoping it will be a good omen for the England team and that they’ll actually win the World Cup this year!”

The decorations have been attracting attention from passers-by – and the team hopes it will encourage more people to get into the World Cup spirit.

Joe added: “When people go past on the bus we see them stop and stare at the bunting.

“Some of the drivers will also be putting flags up in their cars to keep people in the party spirit.

“We usually take a lot of customers to the pubs during the matches, so I’m sure this year will be no different.

“Hopefully everyone will jump on the bandwagon and put their own decorations up too.”

Fellow director Rob Foster, 52, came up with the idea for ‘Ken’ the mannequin.

He said: “The World Cup is not a million miles off now, so we thought it was about time we started getting ready to celebrate.

“Now we’re ready for England to win it some time this century!

“No one else in Clifton has put anything up yet as far as we know so hopefully this will spur people on to show their support for England.

“We hope Ken will put a smile on people’s faces.

“With all the tram works going on in Clifton people are getting fed up of the traffic and congestion.

“Hopefully this will cheer them up as they walk up the street.”

It is not the first time NG11 Cars has flown the flag outside the office – the firm also put up England flags on St George’s Day.

Rob and Joe say they hope to continue with the decorations all year round, and are planning a holiday theme once the World Cup is over.

Joe added: “I think we’ll dress Ken in a Hawaiian shirt and give him a suitcase!”

Wendy Sheldon, 49, who works as a school escort for NG11 Cars, said: “This is just a bit of fun that will hopefully cheer everyone in Clifton up.

“It’s also a good opportunity for us to show our support for the England team. Hopefully we’ll be celebrating a win for England this year!”

The World Cup starts on Thursday, June 12. England’s first match will be against Italy on Saturday, June 14 at 11pm.

They will then play Uruguay on Thursday, June 19 at 8pm and Costa Rica on Tuesday, June 24 at 5pm.

Not everyone shares the same enthusiasm for the World Cup.

Absolutely. Now all they need is for the Council to tell them to take it down and they will get another few grands worth of advertising.
A few years ago whilst still in limoland I managed to get on the front page of the local paper 3 weeks running and 3 X 3 minute slots on the local news for 2 weeks running with a Valentines day story.
can't fault them. =D> =D> =D> =D>

Wonder who'll be offended first, the council or a non-English.
Actually I bet it's only the council who'll want it removing 'in case' someones offended by the English flag.

We can't fly them round here, the Sky Preachers have been in touch with the Council already. They can have Pakistani flags in their cars when they're playing cricket but the lads can't have the St Georges flags when the football is on.

The drivers here usually have the window flags on their cars and the councils attitude is so long as you don't over do it they don't mind.

A landlord in (I think) London put a sign in a window asking for tenants - it said 'Pakistani families only'.
The police have said no offence has been committed;

So it's an offence to put up a sign saying 'whites only' or 'no asians' but not to put up one saying 'Pakistanis only' ? :?:
I thought racial discrimination worked both ways ?

I suspect no offence occurred as it was taken down before any offence could occur.

Someone would have had to be refused for there to be an offence. IMO.
