Milton Keynes passenger claims Raffles minicab driver threw money at her in argument

A PASSENGER has claimed a driver from a private hire company threw her money at her during a dispute over a fare.

Faith Blumberger, 21, booked a taxi from her home in Woughton on the Green to Fox Milne with Raffles on Thursday.

She said “When I booked I was told it would be £3.50. The driver asked for £4.80 and that’s when the dispute started.”

The driver called his controller, who agreed Miss Blumberger should be charged more because of the distance she had travelled.

Raffles director Katie McKeon said: “We do supply estimates but unfortunately for this journey the estimate was not very accurate. Our telephonist did say it would cost ‘about £3.50’ and as such it was an inaccurate estimate, for which we apologise.”

When Miss Blumberger attempted to pay the driver the cheaper fare she says he threw the money back at her.

She added: “He yelled that he didn’t want my money and shouted at me to ‘get lost’. He then threw all the coins at me. It was a scary overreaction.”

The driver has denied throwing the money but Mrs McKeon added: “We would like to apologise for the reaction of our driver to this incident and the behaviour that Miss Blumberger had to endure. The driver will be spoken to and reprimanded for his actions.”

Miss Blumberger is now calling for private hire companies to be clearer on how much passengers will be charged.

She added: “I felt like the driver was trying to overcharge me. It just shows that young women need to be careful with taxis.”

What a great firm to work for, they are no doubt paying peanuts to girls in the office who have total control over driver's earnings.

And should the LC proposals make the statute there will be millions of cases like that.

I think the firm was crystal clear what they were charging, it was just wrong, and given by a dozy cow working for a two bob outfit.

I've had a few of these, problem is the office base the quote on distance and don't take into account roadworks, diversions, congestion or the punter changing the route.

I've had the going to pick a mate up first, then go to a shop then a cashpoint, all off route and incurring waiting time, then on asking for the fare be told 'the office said it would be £9 thats all your getting'.

We also offer a fixed fare on some routes, I've got halfway and then been asked to go back because they've forgot their wallet/keys/phone/id and they still insist it's a fixed fare and they won't pay any more !
