Job threat to minicab drivers



A Halifax minicab company say 60 jobs will be lost if plans to lease their depot to a remote service business are passed by Calderdale Council Planning Committee.

Premier Cars, Bull Green, is under threat to find new premises as the landlord wants to let out the unit to out-of-town Office for National Tyres depot.

An application for change of use was previously rejected in 2013.

12 letters of objection were submitted to the Planning Committee and over 20 drivers attended the Town Hall meeting. Objectors say the change of use will result in the loss of 60 jobs.

Premier driver Mohammed Mukhtar, 31, said: “If this was a factory with the threat of a loss of 60 jobs - would they close that down to allow for a remote service - why can’t they be relocated.

The planning committee deferred the motion in order to give the matter more consideration.

Taxi firm saved by councillors


Calderdale Council Planning Committee put their necks on the line to protect the livelihoods of Halifax taxi drivers.

Dozens of Premier Car drivers attended Tuesday’s Halifax Town Hall meeting to see if the National Tyre Service application, to change the Bull Green taxi firm into an office for the tyre company, was passed by councillors.

The recommendation was to permit but the planning committee unanimously refused the application on the grounds of approval resulting in the decline of economic vitality in Halifax town centre and refused in support of economic growth.

A loss of 70 jobs would be incurred for the creation of two National Tyre office jobs.

After a previous deferred application, the applicant was told to find suitable town centre premises for the taxi firm who say the majority of their business is due to their central location.

An applicant spokesperson said 12 town centre properties suitable for a private hire company had been sourced. He said: “I support the officers recommendation to permit this application.”

Objector coun Faisal Shoukat (Lab, Park) said the proposed new sites were not feasible for the ‘ethical business enterprise’ which takes in excess of 6,000 fares per week.

Councillor Megan Swift (Lab, Town) said: “It would be easier for the tyre company to find a town centre location. Premier Cars benefits people in Calderdale and 70 people - loss of employment will have a knock-on effect on communities.”

Premier Cars and National Tyre Service Ltd are currently embroiled in a legal battle.
