Carlyle ponders sale of London minicab firm Addison Lee

Carlyle Group, the US-based private equity firm, is considering selling Addison Lee, the London minicab company.

The decision is part of an evaluation of the business, which Carlyle bought a majority stake in for around £300m in April 2013.

The evaluation, to be conducted by Credit Suisse and likely to be completed by autumn this year, will look into whether Carlyle should sell the minicab business, or if the private equity firm should look to invest further in Addison Lee. Investment could potentially expand the business, both to other UK cities and internationally.

Addison Lee was founded by John Griffin in 1975, starting in Battersea with a single car, but expanded to over 4,500 minicabs in service today.

The firm transports over 10m passengers a year in London.

It also runs a courier service with over 1m deliveries a year.

The news of the potential sale follows increasing competition in London between black taxi cabs and private-hire minicab firms in a crowded market, with smartphone apps being offered by Hailo and Uber recently adding to the mix.

Tensions hit a peak earlier this month over Uber in particular, as black cab drivers took to Trafalgar Square in their thousands to protest against the San Francisco-founded company, on a day that included protests in other European cities such as Paris, Madrid and Berlin.

Addison Lee was itself hit by protests at its offices in 2012, following comments by founder John Griffin in the company magazine. He suggested that cyclist deaths in the capital were an unavoidable result of increased numbers of untrained cyclists using London roads.

Addison Lee has continued to make gains in recent years, as revenues increased 16 per cent to £171.6m in the year to August 2013, and net profit tripled to £16m during the period.

Carlyle Group declined to comment yesterday.

It wasn't going to be long, Carlyle like to profit then make an exit in the shortest time possible.

If they paid £300 million for Addison Lee I can't see them making a profit. I think it was a shrewd move by John Griffin when he sold the business. I think he knew that with the advent of UBER the likes of Addison Lee were going to come under extreme pressure and he found a mug company prepared to pay a stupidly high price for something that would soon be worth very little.

yep you're correct - even the proposed changes to the law make no difference to London - despite what utterings were coming out of Addy Lee

With regard to the proposed changes, what is there so far in the "Bill" is very much open to change. No doubt, when it gets to Parliament many of us (I include myself) will be lobbying MP's and Peers for changes. If you think that the big PH Operators will not do the same you are sadly mistaken. They will do all they can to raise the value of their Companies by getting the final Bill to suit them best. We will all have our own corners to fight.

The proposed Bill is just that, a proposal.

All Drivers, proprietors, PH Drivers and even Operators have an awful lot of input yet before it is Law. That said, I can't see any possibility of anything coming to Parliament before the next election.

I did read your comment CC, I then reinforced the position.

I say again that there will be changes, probably many changes, before it is a statute.

Possibly changes before the Bill is presented, post presentation, amendments. Two words that effectively mean the same thing.

Personally I'm of the opinion that if Carlyle did indeed pay £300 million for Addison Lee it will have been in stages and subject to certain conditions. Perhaps those conditions have not been met and are not likely to without further investment. It could be that Carlyle keep % share in Addison Lee but make no further payments or investments for the company, they could of course just sell the shares they have if they feel they won't make the profits they envisaged

I take it you read the agreement for the purchase of Addison Lee then? I have no doubt that the figure of £300 million is real I'm just not so sure there won't have been conditions as to performance

I think if they kept AL and expanded it to Airports then a lot of money could be made.

However I'm not sure this mob is in it for the long term, so they will be lucky to get their money back.
