Taxi driver counts cost after thief stole car as he helped elderly passenger to her door

A TAXI driver has been left counting the cost after a man stole the vehicle as he helped an elderly passenger to her door.

As reported at www.grimsbytelegraph.co.uk, the silver Ford Mondeo was taken from Laceby Road at 1.15pm on Monday.

Humberside Police received a call to say the vehicle had been spotted parked up on Catherine Street at 6.50pm, but on their arrival the car was driven away.

Officers pursued the driver through Grimsby and made a number of attempts to stop the car.

A white van and Citroen C5 were both damaged by the stolen vehicle during the pursuit.

Witnesses at the scene said two of the car's tyres had burst as he "scraped and slid" his way along Hainton Avenue and Heneage Road.

It is also claimed he narrowly avoided hitting two pedestrians, although this has not been confirmed by police.

The car was eventually stopped in People's park at 7pm.

The driver, a 29 year old man, was arrested at the scene.

Keep checking your Grimsby Telegraph for updates.

Any witnesses are asked to call police on 101.
