Taxi rules to be tightened

BASILDON Council is set to tighten up rules on taxi licences.

Councillors were set to approve new guidelines this week, making it harder for applicants with a history of violent or sexual crime to get a licence.

A line was added to the rules saying: “An applicant with a conviction for a serious sexual offence is likely to be refused.”

Guidelines were updated to say individuals convicted of the most serious sexual offences would be refused, while those with less serious sex convictions would have to be free of conviction for 7 to 12 years before they would be considered.

New rules continued: “Existing licence holders should be aware that if the licensing authority receives notification from police that a driver is being investigated for a very serious offence, such as a sexual offence, then the authority will decide upon the appropriate action to be taken to safeguard the public, based on the allegation being made.

“This may include considering a specified period of suspension or revocation of the licence with immediate effect on the grounds of public safety.”

Rules were also updated to make it harder for applicants with violent pasts to obtain a licence.

The new rules said: “If an applicant has a history of violence (three or more convictions of any type of violence within a 10-year period) the application will normally be refused, or in the case of an existing driver their licence will normally be revoked.”
