Tele gets scoop on Cornetto ice cream sign mystery

The hunt is over for an ice cream sign stolen from a Dundee shop — after part of the sign reappeared on Friday evening.

Afzal Hayat, 35, had appealed for witnesses in Friday’s Tele after the sign advertising Cornetto ice cream was pinched in a bizarre early-morning incident last Wednesday outside his shop.

But Afzal said: “It was about 6.15pm when a customer spotted a car dropping something off at our back door and went to check. He came running in and said ‘I’ve found your sign!’

“I had a regular customer phone in to say that it was one of her friends who had taken it. Apparently he collects these signs and just took it without thinking of the consequences.”

The theft of the sign was caught on the shop’s CCTV system outside Afzal’s family-owned shop, Premier Hayat’s Supersave, in the Happyhillock Shopping Centre, and showed footage of “an elderly taxi driver” apparently making off with the sign at 5.15am on Wednesday.

Although the culprit has not been directly in touch with Afzal, he has expressed his regret at taking the sign through a friend and sent in a cheque for £50 to pay for the base of the sign which has since been lost.

Afzal said: “His friend called in to say that he was very regretful and has since called in to hand over some money to pay for the sign.

“I’m going to add to the sum and donate it to charity though — my grandfather died of bowel cancer so I’m going to donate the money to the cancer unit.”

The story sparked plenty of reaction with customers in the store as well as on social media, and Afzal is keen to see the positive side of the bizarre set of events.

He added: “We’ve had a lot of reaction from customers and from people on our Facebook page and it really shows how helpful the public can be.

“It was a very strange thing and I think every second customer who came in was asking about what had happened. It was one of the best Fridays we’ve had in the shop, everyone was having a laugh and a giggle.

“We got the sign back and we’ll get a replacement so I don’t want to take the matter any further — I don’t want the guy getting into trouble over something silly like this.”
