Portsmouth councillors to decide taxi licence renewal

COUNCILLORS will decide whether an ageing hackney carriage vehicle should have its taxi licence renewed.

Portsmouth City Council’s policy stipulates licences shouldn’t be given out to hackneys if they’re more than eight years old.

But a driver has requested that his vehicle, a Citroen Dispatch, while more than eight years old, should be granted one.

Council officers have said in a report that they do not support the bid to renew the licence and see no justification to wave the age policy already in place.

They say the vehicle condition is ‘unsatisfactory’ and arrangements for a spot check last month were cancelled as the vehicle broke down and had a snapped alternator belt.

The council’s licensing sub-committee will make a decision on Friday at 10.30am in Portsmouth Guildhall.

Lib Dem councillor Les Stevens is expected to chair the discussion. If members decide to renew the licence, then the vehicle will be subject to another inspection before it is issued.

That can happen on a new vehicle.
