Taxi drivers fear tariff changes could leave them worse off Taxi drivers have complained that upcoming changes to the way they charge for journeys could leave them worse off. In April, the Royal Borough's licensing panel approved the new tariffs, which will apply from August 18. In the day time metres will charge 20p for every 200 yards (183 metres) after the first 1066 yards of the journey. Currently the increase is 21p per 220 yards. It also includes a 20p charge for each 44 second waiting period. The previous charge was 21p for every 48 seconds. Mohammed Yasin has submitted an objection on behalf of his fellow cabbies. He says that over some distances the new tariff will leave drivers worse off than before. His calculations show that for a five mile journey the new fare will be £10.20 compared to £10.29 under the old scheme. Mr Yasin has asked for the price change to be cancelled and replaced with a new scheme. A report set to be heard by the licensing panel tomorrow night asks councillors to consider amending the new tariff. It says: "If drivers' incomes drop there may well be a drop in the standard of vehicle as drivers will not be able to change vehicles so frequently and to keep maintenance standards." However the same report concedes that changes would 'increase costs' to those using taxis. Royal Borough councillors stand by taxi tariff changes Councillors decided to stick with changes made to taxi tariffs and agreed to look into punishing cabbies for waiting in restricted parking areas at a Royal Borough licensing panel held last night. The changes to the pricing system see fares rise by 20p every 200 yards instead of 21p every 220 yards. The panel initially agreed on the new tariff in April to give taxi drivers a three per cent raise - their first since November 2011. The new tariff is due to apply from August 18 But the new scheme drew criticism from Hackney carriage drivers. Mr Mohammed Yasin lodged a complaint that drivers will get less over some distances. A report heard by the borough’s licensing panel last night included the calculations he used. However Cllr David Hilton (Ascot and Cheapside) noticed those figures were based on the fare increasing every 210 yards, instead of 200. He said: “When you substitute 200 yards you get remarkably different results.” He pointed out that over a three-mile distance the fare will be £7.20, not the £7 shown on the calculations Mr Yasin used. The panel then decided to keep the proposed tariff. At the same meeting councillors agreed to open consultation on punishing taxi drivers for waiting in their cars in no parking areas. Hackney carriage drivers are disciplined on a points system, when they have 12 points on their licence they are called in for a meeting with the licensing panel. Currently they can not be given points for parking infringements. They also agreed to consult on giving six points for a driver who does not disclose a previous conviction. Currently drivers receive three points for not letting the borough know they have previous convictions.
