Taxi driver hurt in unprovoked attack

A taxi driver was attacked as he waited to pick up a fare at Leicester railway station.

British Transport Police (BTP) said the victim was parked in the taxi rank outside the station when he was approached by a man who began verbally abusing him.

Pc James Turnbull said: “He then leaned in and threatened the driver with violence before punching him in the shoulder.

“The taxi driver, a 42-year-old local man, got out of the car and was hit by the man twice in head and face.

“The attacker was pulled off the victim by a member of the public and another driver, running out of the station into London Road, where he remained and continued to shout abuse at the victim.”

A BTP officer was alerted by the victim and gave chase, but lost sight of the assailant at the top of Dover Street.

Pc Turnbull added: “This was completely unprovoked, violent behaviour towards a man who was simply trying to do his job.

“As a result of the attack he suffered swelling to his cheekbones and pain and tenderness in the back of his head and neck.”

The incident happened at about 6.35pm on Wednesday, July 30.

Officers have released a CCTV image of a man they want to speak to and are appealing for information.

Pc Turnbull said: “Please contact us if you recognise the man pictured as we believe he may be able to help our enquiry into this unacceptable attack.”

Anyone with information should call British Transport Police on 0800 40 50 40.
