Heavily pregnant wife in Burton street assault A 36-YEAR-OLD man assaulted his heavily pregnant wife while embroiled in an argument in front of their three children.
Assad Javed, of Clays Lane, Branston, appeared at Burton Magistrates' Court on Friday to be sentenced after previously admitting assaulting Sehrish Zaitoon.
The couple had been having an argument on June 23 and his wife left the house and stood in the street, where they continued.
The self-employed taxi driver said he had taken hold of her and caused bruising to the side of her neck.
He had pleaded guilty on a basis and denied slapping her or grabbing her around the neck.
The incident took place in front of their three young children and while the injured party was seven-and-a-half months pregnant.
In his police interview, Javed said his wife was a 'fiery person'. They had become involved in an argument. Javed said he went outside to bring his wife back in and grabbed her arm.
His wife has since retracted her statement.
John Skinner, defending, said: "He accepts he was wrong to use force to bring his wife back inside. He has a strong work ethic and there are no drink or drug issues. Clearly his life revolves around his family. He is quite clearly remorseful and is embarrassed to be in court because of what he did. He is a self-employed taxi driver because it gives him the flexibility."
Javed was given an 18 month community order, with a Building Better Relationships programme and 80 hours unpaid work. He will pay £85 court costs and a £60 victim surcharge.
