Police have launched an appeal after a taxi driver was robbed and stabbed with a knife in a ‘nasty attack’ after he picked up a client from Perry Barr.

The male suspect was picked up in Crown Avenue and upon reaching his destination in Aston in Birmingham; he demanded money from the driver and threatened him at knifepoint. He stabbed the driver in the upper arm and stole money off him before getting out and running off.

West Midlands Police has released distinctive images of the man, caught on CCTV, who they want to trace in the hope anyone has seen him or knows who he is. He is described as being black, 6ft tall and having a stocky build.

DC Jonathan Gill from CID at Birmingham West described the incident as a nasty attack and is appealing for information from anyone who recognises him.

He said: “This was nasty attack on the driver by a customer he had picked up in Perry Barr. The fare then asked him to drive to numerous locations before stabbing and robbing him. I would like to appeal for anyone who may recognise the offender or have information about him to contact police on 101."

The 59-year-old taxi driver was attacked in Camborne Close, Aston around 7pm on Thursday 1 May.

He had picked up the male customer in Crown Avenue in Perry Barr and was then directed to Winston Green and Newtown before being asked to be dropped in Camborne Close.

Once there, the man demanded money and threatened the driver with a knife. The taxi driver handed over a small amount of cash, resulting in the man stabbing him in his upper arm. The man, described as black, 6ft tall and stocky build, then stole £50 before getting out the car and running off.
