Criminal double act who did their best to confuse police

FRANCIS McGraw and his brother Tam were born under the family name of McGrow.

But they kept it secret and changed it to McGraw, because it sounded tougher.

Francis was an original member of the Barlanark Team - a notorious Glasgow robbery gang in the 1970s and 1980s - and, before he acquired a drug habit was said to have been more fearless than his brother.

Safecracker Francis, a senior lieutenant in The Licensee's operation, was trusted to drive his brother's wife Margaret around when needed.

The Licensee also used his brother as a decoy, telling him to mimic his clothes and hair style in order to confuse the authorities.

An underworld source said: "He would work as a stand in for McGraw on alibis and as a decoy when drug deals and other jobs were going down.

"Fritz was also known to have travelled on Tam's passport to Tenerife, when Tam wanted authorities to think he was out the country."

The Licensee, who died of a heart attack in 2007, was estimated to accumulated a fortune of £3 0million through organised crime and drug trafficking.

One of the wealthiest men in Glasgow, he owned numerous front businesses, including security and taxi firms as well as various properties throughout Scotland and in Ireland, worth around £10m.

His drug trafficking activities alone were said to have earned him an estimated £14m.
