Taxi door ripped off as woman driver, 58, is arrested on suspicion of drink driving

The man was taken to hospital

A man was left seriously injured after being run over by a car as he climbed into a taxi in Wavertree.

The 30-year-old victim had been with his wife in the Schmooze wine bar on Church Road in Wavertree before the accident which happened at 11pm on Sunday night.

Police say he was climbing into the taxi on the road side as his wife was getting in on the pavement side when he was struck by a Renault Megane.

Witnesses said the door of the Hackney cab was ripped free and the man, from Childwall, received multiple serious injuries.

He was taken to the Walton Neurological Centre where he remains in a critical condition.

The Megane stopped at traffic lights following the collision and the driver, a 58-year-old woman from the Garston area, was arrested after police were called by members of the public.

The taxi driver and the man’s wife were not injured but she was described as being left “extremely upset and shaken”.

Accident investigators closed the road for forensic examination and it was not reopened until 4am.

Anyone with information is asked to call the roads policing department on 0151 777 5747 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
