Taxi-drivers call for grants to ‘carjack-proof’ their vehicles

The National Private Hire and Taxi Association have spoken out after yesterday’s attack on a Dublin taxi driver.

THERE HAVE BEEN calls for the Government to make grants available to taxi drivers for security equipment, in the wake of another car-jack attack.

A driver was threatened at knife-point in the the latest attack, which happened yesterday at around 4am. The thieves then made off with his car.

Two men, both in their twenties, were later arrested and are being held at Ballyfermot Garda Station.

Jim Waldron of the National Private Hire and Taxi Association said:

It is time the National Transport Association considered giving grants to drivers to install security features in their vehicles.

“The judge should consider the victim in this case is a public servant and crimes committed against public servants need to be dealt with appropriately for society to function,” Waldron said.

There was a similar incident in the West Dublin area last week. A taxi driver was badly beaten and had his car stolen in Palmerstown, West Dublin.

President of the Irish Taxi Drivers’ Federation John Usher has suggested that more extensive use of security cameras in taxis would reduce the number of attacks.
