Dundee taxi firm doing its bit for voter turnout

A Dundee taxi firm has unveiled plans to get voters to the polls on time.

Although they are firmly behind the Yes campaign, the owners of Dundee Taxis Ltd are keen to ensure everyone has their say on September 18.

Everyone, regardless of their political stance, will be offered a free lift to cast their vote.

Wayne O’Hare, who launched the company last year with George Scullion, told The Courier why they are putting their fleet of taxis and minibuses at the disposal of local voters.

“We are very passionate about the referendum,” he said. “We know people who might find it difficult to get out for various reasons and we want to make it easier for them to take part.

“We are going to stop being a taxi company for one day so we can offer lifts to anyone who wants to get out and vote.

“It’s for everyone who needs it — how they vote is their prerogative.”

The stunt has been shared online hundreds of times, winning praise from locals.

It has not found favour with everyone, however, with some people threatening to boycott the firm, which is based at Mid Craigie Road.

Yeah it is illegal during elections, but this isn't an election I guess.

representation of the peoples act 1949 & 1983 - drivers have been prosecuted for it in the past.

Gordon’s drive for Independence

Image

A one man taxi business is doing his bit for independence – offering free lifts to Yes voters going to polling stations on September 18!

Only a wee Yes sticker on his eight-seater minibus would give you any clue that Gordon Doyle is an SNP supporter.

But he told the Journal and Gazette that he has been a supporter of independence for about 40 years.

Gordon said: “Now that I have my own taxi business, I can do what I like and I am hoping to help those who don’t have any transport to get to a polling station. “I hope this will be seen as a bit of community spirit. It’s not all about money, after all.”

Although he is based in Bo’ness, Gordon is offering a lift to voters in Bo’ness and Linlithgow; contact him on 01506 264242.

YES Bo’ness volunteer Michael Vance is also offering his tartan-clad VW campervan to take voters to the polls in real Scottish style.

Michael usually hires the vehicle out for people to enjoy on their holidays.

But on Thursday he will be running voters and volunteers around Bo’ness to ensure that they are all where they should be at the right time.

Michael is a died in the wool YES campaigner who has been involved with the movement from the very start.

Taxi drivers are well known for having strong views on matters of importance but recent polls have shown that the view on independence is fairly evenly split.

The TNS-BMRB poll on September 4 showed the NO camp leading by 39 per cent to the YES camp’s 38 per cent and the Don’t Knows at 23 per cent.

Professor John Curtice, Professor of Politics at Glasgow University, wrote on the What Scotland Thinks blog that TNS said it is now a dead heat.

The YouGov poll on September 5 showed YES in the lead at 47 per cent with NO trailing at 45 per cent and Don’t Knows at 7 per cent.

Professor Curtice said it was the third increase in a row for the Yes campaign.

would that be be the wee one in the off side rear window or the Great big one covering half of his off side rear door?

Besides, a Yes Sticker does not make him an SNP supporter and I'm sure there are a few Closet SNP supporters who will vote NO on the quite also.

Still at least the guy had the sense to advertise his Business name and phone number for all to see...shrewd indeed.

Err - excuse me a second - what's illegal here exactly ? Err, a £5000 fine - for what exactly ?

Err - this is a democracy right ? Yes - freedom of speech and all - the freedom all those men fought for in World Wars and all - right? Its a free country I'm in here, so who the f are YOU to tell ME what to do?

I have driven a taxi plastered with Yes stickers for the last six weeks and had no problems whatsoever.

Interesting scenario......

Scotland votes 'yes' and leaves the UK

Tories win next UK election and hold EU referendum (as currently promised)

Referendum votes for UK withdrawal

Scotland join the EU

That border image you post could well become a reality - the UK wouldn't leave the EU on the basis of foreign immigration then allow a route in via the Northern border surely?

No, just some Nawbags trying to make a point.
For accuracy, they'd have been better setting it up a few yards down the road since it's Westminster threatening to do this, not Scotland.

I think a strong border will be needed - bringing much needed employment - and investment to the border \:D/

Don't worry, it's not going to come to that anyway.
